Harendra Coomar Mookerjee (1877-1956) was the Governor of West Bengal
from November 1, 1951 through August 8, 1956.

teacher Akshay Kumar Chattopadhyay.
the first Indian to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree (from the
University of Calcutta). Mookerjee's doctorate was in
English literature, and he went on to become a philanthropist,
Chancellor of the University of Calcutta (as the Governor of West
Bengal), Vice President of the Constituent Assembly of India, and
Chairman of the Minorities Committee of that assembly.
Following the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, Dr Mookerjee was
appointed Governor of West Bengal. He died in office on August 8, 1956
